Surf and Sport

LBI is a great place for many types of traditional and nontraditional water sports. Long Beach Island is ideal because we have the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay to use as our playground.

Surfing Etiquette

- Surf Outside the swimming flags when lifeguards are present.

- Figure out which way the current is going and walk the beach up current to paddle out, avoiding drifting into the swimming area.

- The person on the inside of the wave has the right away.

- Don't paddle circles around surfers to get on the inside.

- If you are on the inside and keep missing the wave, other surfers have the right to jump on.

- If someone is riding a wave, never paddle for that wave.

- When paddling out, avoid paddling towards someone who is riding a wave.

- Look at the break and study it before you go out.

- If you don't know something ask an experienced surfer, visit a local surf shop or e-mail us at simple@lbislandlife.com

The island has many new sports that are being tried and tested...

The new adventures of kiting are rising on our island. Although kite boarding has been around for quite some time, it seems as though the wind is picking up for this sport in our area. The near future holds a gusty wind with a high chance of crowded kite boarding. Let’s be respectful of our beaches and learn the etiquette of safe kite boarding.
